Parks For Pollinators 2021 BioBlitz

Centre Region Parks and Recreation is back for its 2nd year hosting a local BioBlitz--part of a nationwide, fun challenge to see how many pollinator species can be found in September! We want to engage our local community in pollinator awareness and education while also collecting local pollinator data which will help in future planning for parks and facilities!

You can participate by exploring the nature and wildlife in the designated Centre Region parks. Any observation you make will count during our event. Park and recreation agencies from across the country will be hosting Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz events throughout the month.

Overall, our desired outcomes include:
**Engaging community members in a nature-based event that will bring them closer to local wildlife and habitats with a friendly competition.
**Developing a 2nd year inventory of our park properties' natural resources, so that we can compare it to the first year data.
**Identifying invasive species.
**Identifying endangered or critically threatened species.
**Helping inform our conservation plans, planning, or land management practices.
**Raising awareness of the biodiversity within our local parks.
**Creating new partnerships with organizations and groups.
**Developing and increasing our pollinator database for grants and other funding sources to help improve or create pollinator habitat.

By participating in this project, your outcomes may include:
**Having fun and being inspired to enjoy the natural world, and contribute to its conservation.
**Developing a greater understanding of local wildlife and habitats.
**Gaining first-hand experience of how biological recording works.
**Developing wildlife identification skills alongside communication and teaching skills.
**Becoming more aware of wildlife and conservation in our local community.
**Being encouraged to continue recording wildlife sightings after the event.

We will be returning to the same parks used for the 2020 BioBlitz specifically to get year #2 data and see how the results differ. Those parks include:
Bernel Road Park, Blue Spring Park, Cecil Irvin Park, Eugene Fasick Park, Fairbrook Park, Gray's Woods Park, Lederer Park, Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, Oak Hall Regional Park, Spring Creek Park, and Tom Tudek Memorial Park.

For those of you who will be using the iNaturalist App for the first time, Agency staff will provide a short training opportunity (via Zoom) so that you will be comfortable using your smartphone while in the parks during the BioBlitz. This training will be on Monday, August 30 at 6:30 PM, and Zoom details will be provided to those who register for the training.

Additional information will be sent to all BioBlitz participants to ensure that you understand this project's goals and have everything ready for the September 1 start!

Note:

This activity requires a smart phone and a free account on the iNaturalist app which can be downloaded from the app store (Apple/Android).
